Playing MegaMillions in New York
The draws take place twice a week at 11 pm on a Tuesday and a Friday. The format of play is easy, as you just need to pick five numbers from 1 to 70, as well as one Mega Ball from 1 to 25 for your ticket. In order to win the jackpot, you need to match all five numbers plus the Mega Ball. To make things easier and more exciting you could simply choose the Easy Pick option for a random selection of numbers.
Cost of a ticket: $2
Megaplier: $1 per play
Cost of a Just the Jackpot ticket: $3
Draws: Every Tuesday and Friday at 11 pm ET (New York Schedule)
Chances of winning any sort of prize: 1 in 24
If you want to test your luck further you could always add a Megaplier to your lottery ticket upon purchase. This would allow you to possibly multiply anything you won by 2X, 3X, 4X or 5X (this doesn’t include the jackpot amount). This extra option of play is very popular with Mega Millions players and can boost any prize money you win significantly. The Megaplier ball is selected from 15 balls: a single 5X ball, 3 balls of 4X, 6 balls of 3X and 5 balls of 2X. All you have to do is check the Megaplier draw just before the main jackpot draw is done on draw nights.
Just the Jackpot
There is also the Just the Jackpot option to consider, where you can play only for the Mega Millions jackpot prize. This means that you are not eligible for lower-tier prizes - just the jackpot. This option varies from state to state, so check your state’s lottery website.
Mega Millions Prizes
The starting jackpot on the Mega Millions is always $40 million, with a guaranteed rollover of at least $5 million. This continues until there is a jackpot winner, and with no caps, you can be sure of some astounding amounts when somebody wins the jackpot. There are nine prize levels, so there is plenty of chances for players to win cash prizes, depending on how many matching numbers you have on your lottery ticket.
Players have good odds of winning any sort of cash prize at 1 in 24, so there is every reason to play. If you win the jackpot then you have the option of receiving your prize in annual payments over a 29 year (with a 5% increase every day to beat inflation) period. Alternatively, you can claim a one-off cash payment at a slightly lower amount than the jackpot prize. You will be liable for normally applicable taxes.
There is a good spread of cash prizes available to win for players, from $2 for having one matching Mega Ball, to $1 million at the second tier level - and even this can be multiplied by 5X by playing the Megaplier option, meaning you could win $5 million! This ensures that the Mega Millions lottery stays popular all around the world.
